Sugar Addiction is a growing problem :

How much do we really need to consume?

How much are we willing to cut down ?

Are most people in denial over their sugar habit?

Let’s look at the chequered history of sugar and what it represents:

Although sugar is known to have grown for thousands of years in the Pacific region,   it was not traded in Europe until the sixteenth century.  Even as early as 1573, the German botanist Leonhard Raulwolf viewed it as an addictive substance!!

It was taken from the Middle East by the Europeans and grown in Madeira where the rainforests were destroyed to accommodate it.

Later, trade in slaves and sugar began in America.    What a price to pay for a little sweetness.

Sugar is regarded as a symbol of love and happiness:   we cannot have any event without cakes covered in sugar, girls are referred to as ‘sugar and spice and all things nice’.  It is so deeply embedded in our psyches that, despite all detrimental evidence, we still continue our love affair with it.

As a homeopathic remedy it can help with the following symptoms:

  • Whining
  • Irritability
  • Quarrelsome disposition
  • Ailments from suppressed emotions or disappointment

Knowing the effects of eating sugar, it is of no surprise that the mental effects of sugar consumption are exactly the same symptoms that the remedy helps.

For example:

Katy gets dumped by her boyfriend and seeks solace in chocolate and sweets –instead of dealing with the situation she eats even more sugar to cheer herself up and the emotions are suppressed. Eventually this leads to irritable and explosive behaviour.

On a physical level once again, sugar as a remedy helps with the symptoms that we would expect from sugar consumption:

  • Hyperactivity
  • Candida
  • Immune system depressed
  • digestive symptoms
  • acne
  • PMT
  • high cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • oedema

Of course, in many of the above cases, the underlying cause of the condition will be an excess of sugar in the diet.   So, in addition to taking the remedy, patients should also be advised to avoid or cut down on sugar.
